Why We Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

As we know, November is Native American Heritage Month, also referred to as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.

According to the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), “The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.”

At eCivis, we are proud to work with tribal governments who face unparalleled challenges addressing the pandemic yet continue to deliver important impacts in their communities. Take the Osage Nation for example.

Tribal Governments Making a Difference: The Osage Nation

Based in Osage County, Oklahoma, the Osage Nation is a federally recognized tribe with 8,357 enrolled members living in Oklahoma. The continuation funding grants and contracts they administer go to service-oriented projects including housing, child care, counseling, women and children, and senior services.

The Challenge

To continue funding these important priorities, the Osage Nation needed a grants management system that could help them plan and provide accurate information to decision makers so they could get funding out faster.

Unfortunately, the Osage Nation was struggling with:

  • Poorly defined grants processes
  • Inefficient tracking in Excel spreadsheets
  • Minimal program accountability
  • Compliance issues for the 90+ grant programs they managed

The Solution

The tribe's Office of Strategic Planning & Grants Management turned to eCivis to help provide tracking and reporting software as well as a user-friendly research database to help them quickly find and track grants.

With a centralized grant management system in place, the tribe was able to:

  • Centralize all of their grant and contract information
  • Reduce hard-copy files
  • Improve their processes and monitoring for tracking and reporting
  • Implement program accountability

The Results

Ultimately, the Osage Nation was able to organize its grant portfolio and administer and track grants with greater efficiency and transparency.

As a result:

  • Decision makers and administrators can quickly see all grant activity in one place.
  • All grant documents are electronically filed in one system.
  • The tribe can now tie financial and programmatic reports to a grant.

Celebrating Tribes
In addition to the Osage Nation, many tribal governments are refining their grants processes and leveraging the most of available grant funding to help their communities rebuild and continue to prosper.

We celebrate Native American heritage and culture and salute the many tribes doing everything they can to help communities in need during these challenging times.
