National Center for Safe Routes to School: SmartStart Bike Share Giveaway

The National Center for Safe Routes to Schools, in collaboration with the Schwinn Company, will celebrate the National Bike to School Day in 2016 by hosting the SmartStart Share Giveaway, a program that will award 10 SmartStart Schwinn bikes and 20 Schwinn helmets to ten schools across the United States. These bikes are specifically designed to address challenges and concerns for new bike riders and are optimized to fit children as they grow. These awards will be disbursed to support school bicycling safety activities. Schools interested in the program must register by 5:00 p.m. ET on May 31, 2016.

The Wyland Foundation’s Annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation

The Wyland Foundation’s National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation will be held during Earth Month, from April 1 to April 30, 2016. The competition encourages cities across the nation to see who can be the most water-wise by asking residents to take a series of informative, easy-to-use pledges online to conserve water, energy, and other natural resources. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the pledges in their population category will win prizes. In the past year, more than $50,000 in prize money was distributed through the program. Mayors and city leaders may sign their cities up for the contest by April 30, 2016.

Technology for Healthy Communities

The Technology for Healthy Communities program facilitates the adoption of technology solutions by underserved communities as they tackle their most pressing health issues. The program will match four underserved communities with health technology innovators to conduct pilot projects with the ultimate goals of improving health outcomes in the community’s target population and developing a sustainable commercial model in the community setting. Communities must submit online applications by communities by May 17, 2016. Winning communities will be announced in June 2016.

My American Farm Outreach Grants

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is looking for ten schools to take part in the American Farm Outreach Grant Program. Each award recipient, upon completion of an agricultural outreach event, will receive $1,500 to further its efforts in sharing the importance of agriculture in everyday life. All middle and high schools willing to reach out to elementary schools during the spring or fall of 2016 are eligible to apply. There is no set application due date.

Northwest Profession Educators (NWPE) Scholarships and Grants

The NWPE is making several scholarship and grant programs available to all educators in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington who have not received a scholarship or grant from the agency in the last three years. Programs include teacher scholarships of up to $500 to help educators advance their professional careers (application deadlines of March 1, 2016, and October 1, 2016); classroom grants of up to $500 to help pay for class projects or materials (application deadlines of March 1, 2016, and October 1, 2016); and new classroom start-up grants of up to $250, which will offset some costs for setting up new classrooms (deadline of December 31, 2016). All applications must be submitted online.

Emerging City Champions

Emerging City Champions is a fellowship program for young civic innovators with transformative ideas. The program is looking for future leaders with creative solutions that will enhance civic engagement, improve mobility, and activate public life in public spaces. Applicants must be youths in the 26 communities listed on the program website, and applications must be submitted starting on March 28, 2016. Award recipients will receive $5,000 in seed funding, as well as additional resources and technical support/assistance.

National Weather Association (NWA) Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grants

The NWA’s Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grants are awarded to teachers and educators of grades K-12 to help improve education in the science of meteorology for their students, schools, and/or communities. Awards may be used for the purchase of scientific material and equipment, the establishing of science outreach and education program, the enhancement/expansion of existing meteorology education programs, and support for attending accredited courses, workshops, and/or conferences related to meteorology that will significantly enhance the participants’ teaching activities. Applications must be submitted online by June 1, 2016.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Connections

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s New Connections: Increasing Diversity program supports research projects and career development opportunities for researchers. The program is designed to expand the diversity of perspectives that inform the funding agency’s programming and introduce new researchers to the funding agency to help address research and evaluation needs. All research must work to build a case for a culture of health with a strong qualitative and quantitative research element, and produce and translate timely research results. Eligible applicants must have completed a doctoral degree within the past ten years, and will compete to receive grants of up to $50,000. A total of 17 awards will be provided. Applications must be submitted online by 3:00 p.m. ET on May 4, 2016.

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Training for 2016

The OCRA will conduct training sessions to introduce cities, towns, and counties to the federal CDBG program. Workshops will offer the CDBG 101 Basic Course, which is the first step for a community becoming a CDBG accredited grant administrator. Participants will attend training events from April 4 to April 18, 2016, and then take a final exam on April 25, 2016. Applicants must use the registration form provided on the program website to register, and must pay a fee of $100.

New Jersey Farm to School Award and Recognition Program

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Farm to School Award and Recognition Program will find and recognize the top school in the state participating in farm to school activities. The program will also recognize schools that work with farmers and the community to ensure that students have access to healthy Jersey fresh fruits and vegetables in their school cafeterias and teach about agriculture through growing school gardens. Applications must be submitted online by June 1, 2016.
