HUD: Youth Demonstration Grant Workshops

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will be hosting two calls regarding the availability of $33 million for a new demonstration project that will explore how best to implement a coordinated community response to preventing and ending youth homelessness. HUD is inviting stakeholders to participate in a discussion of how this project should take shape, and to discuss their experience as part of a community’s crisis response system and how HUD could help strengthen a community’s coordinated response. Optional calls will be held at 3:00 p.m. on March 17, 2016, and at 3:00 p.m. on March 24, 2016.

Department of Education: Career and Technical Education (CTE) Makeover Challenge

The Department of Education has announced the availability of $200,000 and additional in-kind prizes for the design of makerspaces that strengthen next-generation career and technical skills through the CTE Makeover Challenge. Makerspaces provide students with the materials and environment they need to create, invent, tinker, and explore, helping them build vital career skills. All participating schools will gain access to the CTE Makeover Bootcamp, a six-week program that provides resources and expertise in makerspace design and planning. Up to ten honorees will receive $20,000 in cash and other prizes to turn their vision for a makerspace into a reality. Submissions must be received by April 1, 2016.

The interactive question-and-answer format of the webinar will guide attendees through decision-making processes that will save time and avoid disappointment.

EPA Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators

Applications are now being accepted for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. This award recognizes outstanding K-12 teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for learning for their students. Up to two teachers from each of the EPA’s ten regions, from different states, will be selected to receive this award. Award recipients will receive a presidential award plaque, an award of up to $2,500 for professional development in environmental education, and an additional award of up to $2,500 for their local education agency to fund environmental education activities and programs. Applications must be received by May 16, 2016.

Water Research Foundation Requests for Proposals (RFPs)

The Water Research Foundation provides numerous funding opportunities to support research that helps provide safe, reliable, and affordable water to the public. Proposals are currently being accepted for a variety of projects, including projects related to promoting safe drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, evaluating water reuse pricing, plumbing, water resources planning and management, reduced energy consumption, biofiltration, and improving communication among water networks. Deadlines for current RFPs vary, with select proposal submission periods ending as early as March 30, 2016.

Boeing K-12 Educational Resources

As part of their centennial, Boeing engineers teamed up with several leading educational partners to co-create educational resources for use by K-12 teachers. Boeing has created a variety of free resources that can be used to help inspire K-12 students to learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Examples of the free resources available to teachers include lesson plans, teaching strategies, interactive media, and affordable, accessible engineering design challenges, all of which are designed to support instructional practices for high-quality student engagement and learning.

BECR Center: 2016 Healthy Food Behavior Grants

The Center for Behavioral Economics and Healthy Food Choice Research (BECR Center) is currently accepting brief proposals for the 2016 Healthy Food Behavior Research Grants Program: Behavioral Economics to Promote Healthier, Economical Food Choice. Up to six awards ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 will be made to support teams of researchers in developing and implementing focused field experiments either alone or coupled with secondary data analysis using behavioral economics theory and strategies to improve food choice, particularly among low-income individuals. Brief proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m. ET on May 20, 2016. Select applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Ohio Department of Transportation: Safe Routes Academy

The Ohio Safe Routes Academy provides training, workshops, and implementation programs to communities throughout Ohio, including active transportation training on programs, projects, and policy. Adult training programs are offered free of charge, and will provide attendees with public domain continuing education units (CEUs). Workshops are requested through an application process, and awarded based on instructor availability. Any local jurisdiction is eligible to apply for a workshop. Interested nonprofit organizations must partner with the local jurisdiction to apply. Most workshops will benefit school district administrations, teachers, staff, health professionals, parents, advocates, and transportation professionals and volunteers.

Ohio Fitness Center Award

Ohio has been selected as the state to kick off the National Foundation for Governor’s Fitness Councils’ National Fitness Champion Campaign. Through this program, three Ohio elementary and middle schools that have demonstrated new and innovative ways of introducing physical activity and wellness into their curricula will be selected to receive new $100,000 state-of-the-art fitness centers. Priority consideration will be given to schools with a significant low-income population, and to schools that demonstrate a robust plan for using the equipment to improve the health and fitness of their students and the greater community. Applications are due by May 31, 2016.
