Grant Writing and Commission-Based Payments

Contingency fees or percentage fees are commission-based payments issued to professionals only if there is a favorable result from their work. In the case of grant writing, it means that a grant writer is paid based on a percentage of the grant awarded.

There are a number of reasons why grant writer associations consider commission-based payments unethical and why most grantors disallow such payments. From the grant writer’s standpoint alone, eCivis blog contributor Dr. David Lipten begins his case with the following:

Grant writers do the same amount of work whether or not a proposal is funded. You wouldn’t expect to have to pay a doctor only if you were 100% cured, right? So, in the same way, grant writers should be able to expect to receive compensation for any/all services rendered.
