On March 18, President Obama signed into law the 6th Continuing Resolution for funding the operations of the federal government in FY 2011. This Continuing Resolution runs until April 8 and includes an additional $6 billion in funding reductions compared with FY 2010 enacted levels. The failure of the House, the Senate, and the White House to agree on funding levels for the remainder of the year necessitated the passage of the new short-term Continuing Resolution. The following are a sample of program reductions included in the Continuing Resolution:
- $14.8 million cut — Save America's Treasures Grant Program
- $125 million cut — Career Pathways Innovation Fund
- $19 million cut — Public Telecommunications Facilities and Construction
Congress is pressed for time as they are scheduled to be in recess for two weeks from April 18-29, and congressional leaders are negotiating FY 2011 funding for the remainder of the year. House Republicans have proposed another short-term Continuing Resolution, giving them another week, until April 15, to negotiate a broader package. The White House and Senate Democrats have rejected another short-term Continuing Resolution. If there is no agreement, the federal government will shut down.
